DEBBIE
Rix is without question the finest golfer Cobden has ever
produced.
A two-time winner of the
Victorian Amateur Championship, Rix represented the Garden State
in the Gladys Hay Interstate Series ten times. She also won the
South Australian Amateur, dominated the club championship at
Cobden with eight titles and notched up a string of district
championship victories.
Rix started her golf at Cobden
when she was just 14. As a junior golfer, she climbed the
amateur ranks quickly. Eventually she joined Commonwealth Golf
Club to secure her selection in the Victorian team.
But she puts her success down to
Cobden Golf Club and the support she got from her home course.
“Country courses like Cobden are
such great places to play golf if you’re a junior,” she said.
“Because there’s no age
restrictions, you can start very young."
“I really cut my teeth at
Cobden. Playing in Melbourne allowed me to take the next step
but I always knew where my home was.”
Rix said her parents had been
very influential in her development. Her father Graeme and
mother Betty had both held several positions on the club’s
executive including past captain and president.
“We’re a golfing family and
Cobden has been an important part of our lives.
“And it still is.”
Today, Rix still has a passion
for golf. And while she still enjoys her golf, she admits that
watching her two daughters play the game brings her plenty of
enjoyment.
“I’ve got two daughters and work
four days a week. So it’s a bit hard.
“But it’s nice to see my girls
playing golf. “
Marli is 15 and Carre is 12.
They’re both members at Cobden
and they love it.
“For me watching them enjoy
their golf is wonderful. I’m sure they’ll get plenty of pleasure
out of golf just like I did when I was their age.”
